GOLDEN JUBILEE
The Govt. Dental College of Thiruvnanthapuram came in to being in the year 1959 and is one of the oldest Dental College in South India. It had a humble beginning as a small Block of the Medical College, Thiruvnanthapuram. Dr. M. Thangavelu the then Principal of the Medical College was instrumental in its initiation. By the time the first Batch of BDS students graduated (1963), the old Block of the Govt. Dental College was commissioned and has been growing in stature ever since. Today it is an independent institution affiliated to the University of Kerala offering Bachelors and Masters Degree Courses in various disciplines of Dentistry. Govt. Dental College is recognized as a Dip NB Examination Centre and Research Centre. It also offers Diploma in Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist courses. More than 1500 students have graduated from this pioneer institution in the field of dental education and its Alumni spread all over India and globally. The institution is providing dental and oral health care faculties to more than one lakh fifty thousand patient’s annually. Even in its infancy there was stress on research. The Indo-Danish Oral cancer project directed By Prof. Thangavelu and then By Prof. Zachariah, Prof, of Oral Pathology and Prof. J.J.Pindborg, a renowned Oral Pathologist from Royal Dental College, Copenhagen, Denmark marked the Beginning of research. In the year 2009 the institution will be completing 50 years of fruitful existence.
